The Rollercoaster of Our Not-So-Carefully Planned Vacation

We needed to get away, but that getaway came at a lot of costs. We had two kids who were upset about lost time saying goodbye to friends. We were trying to negotiate a house purchase and sale while fighting with spotty service and wifi. I was trying to communicate with my new school and my husband was still doing his own work. My determination to support local state parks meant that we were often staying FAR away from the places that we wanted to visit, which meant a lot of driving. I had an idea of what I wanted to do with my family but no real plans, which meant a lot of time and miles were wasted along the way. And everything just kept breaking.

Reflecting on Our Summer Vacation 2019

We spent nearly two weeks in my favorite region of the country and we saw nearly every type of western landscape. We watched the sunset from atop a desert sand dune, accidentally discovered rock riverbeds, journeyed into the depths of the earth, climbed ladders in Mesa Verde, hiked to stunning views in oppressive desert heat, drove to the highest elevations our kids have ever experienced, off-roaded into a canyon, and star-gazed underneath an arch.

Making the Best of Being Stuck in Albuquerque

We didn’t want to become accidental tourists in Albuquerque, but we eventually found the charming side to the city and enjoyed it while we were there. While we would have preferred to have been on the road, it is a worthwhile stop for those who are driving through. It wasn’t in the plan, but we got to extend our vacation just a little more before making the final decision to go home.

A Perfect Vacation Comes to a Screeching Halt – Vacation 2019

Two hours after the initial incident, Jeff decided that we could just make it to town and we would deal with it from there. Despite the fact that we were down an entire wheel, we were somehow upright, and he figured that if we drove slowly and avoided the highways we could make it to the KOA in one piece. It was better than waiting for several more hours on the side of the road while two different insurance companies failed to actually assist us.
